Why we recommend you stick to this rule...
Backing up your data isn’t something you should definitely not disregard; you need to ensure that your private information will survive any unpredictable situation.
A lot of businesses & individuals have suffered from data loss following system failure, file corruption, accidental deletion, or even by natural devastation! With the most common cause being cyber-attacks – the worst kind of data loss.
You may well make a duplicate of your files and save them to an external disk or dump a copy in the Cloud, but is that a secure enough backup to protect your business from total loss?
Here’s how to protect your important data
Welcome to the 3-2-1 Backup rule; a rigorous practice to cover almost all eventualities of data loss and requirement for recovery.
A simple-to-follow structure for keeping all your details & private company data protected & recoverable should the worst situation happen.
Always keep at least THREE duplicates of your up-to-date data.
You cannot foresee data loss, or worse, a random cyber-attack. Having at least three self-regulating backup copies of your data helps to mitigate against the risk of loss. One copy being your original file data (on your servers or cloud storage), with a further two duplicate copies being stored in alternate locations as your backup sources.
Keep TWO backup copies on unique devices or storage media.
Nothing lasts a lifetime, (besides plastic!). We must all remember that storage devices will suffer a failure at some point, or if they are connected to your network at the point of a cyber-attack, may well be corrupted in some way and suffer a loss too.
In order to have peace of mind, you should always have multiple copies on unique devices, and they shouldn’t be the same product, with the possibilities of each device corrupting at similar times.
Store at least ONE backup copy off-site.
A meek, yet very significant rule. If you correctly follow the first two rules, you’re on the right path, but if you don’t have an offsite backup, you’re still vulnerable to the risk of losing everything.
If your external hard drives, disks or cloud storage are all connected to your system or network at the time of corruption or attack, there’s a high risk that everything gets infected resulting in your several points of recovery all lost in one fell swoop.
However, if you’ve got a copy offsite, you will still have a recovery point to reinstate your critical systems and recover all your information should all else fail.
